When choosing the right bike size, make sure that you aren't buying "too much bike" for your child. When sitting on the saddle, the child must be able to touch the ground with his- or her toes.
Also, when the child stands in front of the saddle, with both feet flat on the ground, there should be at least 2 cm between the top tube and his or her crotch. If not, your child could hurt him- or herself when he or she is thrown forward off the saddle (because of fear, accident, a steep drop, etc.).
Note that compared to adults, children are more sensitive to a bike's weight. (The rider-to-bike weight ratio is much lower with children compared to adults.) In other words, a lighter bike (even only 1kg lighter) will be much easier to handle and more nimble than the heavier one. In short, your child will have more fun and ride more!
